Is this really free?
Yes! The do-it-yourself version is completely free and always will be. You get every feature, no catches. The hosted version (coming soon) will have pricing, but the free option isn't going anywhere.
Do you read my messages?
Absolutely not. When you install it yourself, everything runs on YOUR computer. Your messages never leave your setup and we have zero access to anything. For the hosted version, messages are processed but never saved or shared with anyone.
How does it connect to WhatsApp?
The same way WhatsApp Web works — you scan a QR code, just like when you connect a new computer. GroupGuard then shows up as another connected device on your account. That's it.
Will I get banned from WhatsApp?
GroupGuard connects through an unofficial method, so there's a small theoretical risk. But it's designed to behave exactly like a normal user — no spam, no mass messages, nothing suspicious. Many bots like this have been running for years without any problems. We still recommend using a separate phone number, just in case.
What happens when a message is blocked?
Three things happen instantly: the message is deleted from the group (before most people see it), the sender gets a private message explaining which rule they broke, and it's logged. There's also a watch-only mode that just logs without deleting — great for testing your rules before turning them on.
Can admins bypass the rules?
Yes! By default, group admins are exempt from all moderation rules. You can turn this off if you want everyone treated equally, but most groups prefer letting admins post freely.
What do I need to install it myself?
A computer that stays on 24/7 (a cheap cloud server for a few dollars a month works great) and about 10 minutes to follow the setup guide. The instructions walk you through everything step by step.
Does it work in languages other than English?
Yes! The word filter works in any language. The other protections check the type of message (image, link, forward, etc.), not the text — so language doesn't matter.
How customizable is it?
Very. Every protection has settings you can tweak (how many messages are allowed, during which hours, which words to block, etc.). Each group gets its own separate settings. And if you're technical, the code is open source so you can change anything.
Can I use it for multiple groups?
Absolutely. One GroupGuard manages multiple WhatsApp groups at the same time, each with its own rules and its own scheduled tasks. Groups are completely separate from each other.
What about the hosted version?
